Service Is A Four-Letter Word

You have probably counted, scratching your head in this moment, and thinking ‘service is definitely not a 4-letter word!” You are right, but this is not a typo also. Let us dig into it.

Jesus is our ultimate example, so to understand our duty of service in the kingdom we must look at the life of Jesus. The Bible tells us in Matthew 20:28 (CJB) “For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve — and to give his life as a ransom for many.” While on earth Jesus lived His life in service to all men, even those we think did not deserve it, those who despised Him and those who hated Him. Why? Because He loved them. Yes! L.O.V.E was the root of His service.

We understand from scriptures that God is love, He loves us, but He is also love (“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” 1 John 4:8 NIV) going further down to verse 19 it says, “We love because he first loved us.” Before we even got a chance to love God, He loved us, gave to us and came down in the form of man to serve us. With God, love and service are inseparable.

Are there people who serve others they do not love? Most definitely. The lady at the supermarket serves you and probably does not love you, there are Non-profit organizations giving out millions in aid to the less privileged who probably do not love them. All this might be true but that is why we differ; we are citizens of heaven. The heart posture behind what we do is just as important as what we do. Serve from a place of love just like Jesus did and still does. Give in sacrifice and serve whole heartedly. If we understand this, we will see clearly that service is a 4-letter word. Who can you serve today (truly and fully) like God serves you?
